Last Saturday the Krew and I went to check out a free show at the Loft. Infinite, Maneline and others. It was what I expected of a place of that caliber. What do I mean? Typical "club" guys, girls, everyone in their clubbing best. Drinks weren't too expensive. $2.50 for a PBR 16oz'er. About 1am I go outside to get some fresh Denver Air. As I drunkenly glance off into the distance down Champa I see some guys on bikes converging on one place. I am interested to see where they are all going. I stumble across Broadway. My Cons scraping the pavement as I make my way to the mysterious location that is attracting people like flies to a bulb. I get there. not even sure where there is. I hear drums, guitar, and a throaty RAH RAH RAH type of vocal which made it all more intriguing to me. Foolishly I try the corner door under the neon. Fail. I ask the wall to help me to the open door about 20 feet away. It does. No doorman. No cover. I realize, this is an ordinary bar. But it wasn't. I walk in with no back up, didn't need it. I pass a cigarette machine. I think. Pass a few patrons. I creep to the pit. The band that was playing was hard an crunchy, heavy. I remember the drummer had no shirt on. the vocalist was thrashing it. People on the tables. The pit was angry. And people were friendly cool. I think I was there about 20 minutes and I got texted with inquiries of my location. It was the Krew. They had realized that I was gone. Wandered off to destination unknown. I got picked up two blocks away from my original location. The Loft. Went home. The next morning I thought it was all a dream. It wasn't. After internet research I stumbled upon BAR BAR. You know it. 20th or 21st and Champa. I learned that it is one of Denver's oldest bars and it was granted one of Denver's first Liquor Licenses. And, Hunter S. Thompson used to drink there. Who knew? But I take all the info I ever get from the old WWW with a grain of salt. Walking in to that bar was the best moment of that entire night. I hope to do it again. DF* 1/26/2009 05:03:48 am
