Today, the boys over at Akomplice announced their release of a few election quickstrikes. The drop consists of three limited edition pieces, two shirts and one poster, speaking on the volatile nature of our countries political election process. The Big Bird series, made up of a shirt and poster, features a cartoon depiction of Big Bird standing triumphantly over a KO'd Mitt Romney. Riffing on Romney's recent claim that, if elected, he would cut funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS is the home of Sesame Street). The second shirt titled, "Take the Money Out of Politics," strikes a more serious note, featuring an array of political signs Akomplice captured during their trip to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC.
The shirt highlights a core belief that nothing threatens our democracy like unlimited campaign contributions. Fixing the system means making politicians accountable to all of us, not just the big time donors who bankroll their campaigns. We want politicians to work for the people, not just the wealthy companies who ultimately decide our election choices. With politics thick in the air, it's easy to get jaded, which is why it's refreshing to see a company with a sharp and lighthearted take on the subject. This Akomplice release captures our political moment in time, while weighing in on the larger issues like the dis-function of our election process. The Big Bird shirt comes in three colors and is limited to just 60 pieces, while the Take the Money shirt is limited to 50 pieces. There are only 35 hand-numbered copies of the poster, which is screen printed on very heavy card stock paper. The dimensions are 24" x 18". These election pieces will be available today at 12pm PST on Akomplice's Webstore and their flagship in Santa Barbara. For the curious, here is the statement that comes printed on the Big Bird shirt and poster: "Its a sure sign of the times that even Big Bird has become political. And now, politicians have targeted PBS–which airs Sesame Street and represents one of our last unbiased news sources–with budget cuts. PBS isn’t wasteful government spending–it’s a public good. The same politicians who want to gut the program would use the savings to give tax cuts to the rich, adding to the already dangerous concentration of wealth in the world’s top one percent. But as the 99 percent, we are the Big Birds of the world. We’ll fight to keep the money on the streets, where it belongs, and to put knowledge in the hands of every citizen, not just the fortunate few." DF* (via Akomplice) Comments are closed.
